Our good friend Chuck Green recently made a post to Facebook about the digital colorization of historical photographs. His complaint was followed by a ponderous tome of learned comments from both sides of the isle. An alarm went off in my head. I'm thinking; hey, everyone already knows about that -- but then, do they? So I went digging for all the "Digital Ethics" information that I've written about since the late 1980s and discovered -- OMG: over a decade has gone by! These "newbies" could very well not be informed about Digital Ethics.
We read a thread on Chuck Green's Facebook page and becamse so interested in this controversy, we snooped around on the web to see any of the thosands of Photoshop Tutorials took a side. Should we colorize historic black and white images? Well they all seemed to be gung-ho to colorize, with little or no mention of ethics. Even the Civil War web site is full steam ahead . . . and it just about drives you mad . . .

It's not a new trend. Clients have been asking to 'edit' their own web pages since the early 1990s. The problem was, for years, it was html or nothing! For years we tried them all from 'piggyback' programs to designing and building CGI page generaters from scratch. Then Content Management System concept was born.
Today, the new generic top-level domains (gTLDs), the thousands of new domain extensions such as '.photography', '.london' etc., that will be flooding into the market over the next few months, took a step forward and entered a new phase where they are open to applications from anyone.Top-level domains could become important factor in ranking, online brand visibility

Pretty soon, we'll end 2013. Did you do something good this year? The world would be a better place if we all adopted the wisdom of Benjamin Franklin:
Each morning he would ask himself
"What good can I do today?"
... then each evening, before bed, he would ask himself:
"What good did I do today?"
Try to live by that thought.
This month, catch up on good deeds you passed by throughout the year. Help out at the children's organization, or your local Salvation Army. Take a food basket to your local church's food drive. Turn in all your old, unused coats and sweat shirts to the local Goodwill. Pull out that checkbook and write some checks to your local free clinic, or the Boys and Girls clubs.
If you want to know what I'm doing, you can catch up with my charitable foundation at www.appleseedsfound.org
And, to you all, we send our warmest wishes for a joyous holiday season -- and best wishes for a healthy and productive new year. We're proud that you've chosen the Design Center community to be part of your life -- and hope to bring you many benefits in the months to come.
I'd like to send you a new graphic design book!
Here's a reminder that as we move into the new year, it's all about your projects! Designers like to enhance, celebrate or promote during the new year months -- and ward off the winter doldrums! It'll be fun for us all, and I urge you to participate by sending in your ideas, tips, tricks and experiences. Those authors who send letters and articles chosen for publication will receive a Graphic Design Books grab bag from the Design-Bookshelf.com.
