Hello September and kick-off of the 20th Annual Festival

DTGnewsYes, it's that time of year again -- it's the most anticipated and most widely read issue of DT&G, and the most traffic in the Design Center. Here comes all the fun with type, lettering, calligraphy, fonts and typography all over the world. But wait...

PROBLEMS THIS YEAR : Our 20th year edition is too big to send in a single email. Even when we send ascii text only, it won't fit through many gateways. And you know we always say : "You know your email sucks if it's HTML" . . . so this month's newsletter will come in TWO PARTS. This is PART ONE . . . read and enjoy!

Don't forget, the Fonts Fest is two months -- it runs through October! So if you missed getting your portfolio seen by millions of readers, there's still time to let us know you've got something to say

This Year's Fonts Fest Poster

Of course we have an all new poster for this year! But we did it just a little differently -- we pulled from all the 20 years of festivals in the Design Center. We've even provided you a hot link to generate your own, unique, Fonts Festival results in Google's image search. Please enjoy! But let me tell you a little secret: If you pin that poster in your Pinterest or share it in your Facebook, then send me a screen proving you did it, your name will be in a drawing for a matted and FRAMED version of the poster, signed as "ap" by me, ready to hang -- carefully packaged and shipped to your door! This offer is ONLY available in this newsletter, nowhere online. Period. Good luck.

20th Annual Fonts Festival : fonts, lettering and typography surf

My favorite part of the annual fonts fest is just searching for cool entries and resources to share with the DTG readers! If I ever give up the internet publishing thing, this is probably one activity I'll continue in my 60-Second Windows blog. With Pinterest, Tumblr and all the various social image sharing medias, there's no shortage of hunting grounds. You could easily make a full-time job of discovering cool stuff, all day, every day, without seeing the same things twice.

In this first surf for 2014, I'm filtering to the unusual, and off the beaten paths. Much of the surf so far is more about the human interaction with lettering, fonts and typography than the fonts themselves. And of course, that's the most important end result of typography in the first place!

Fonts, lettering and typography surf TWO

As we continue our 2014 fonts and lettering surf, we now visit some studios of extraordinary visual communicators! This is where we enjoy seeing fresh, inspiring uses of fonts, typography and lettering. On this page we'll be visiting the polished clean works of * Matthew Tapia, then off to the Design and creativity * TYPEFIGHT Letter vs. Letter, and the * studios of Design and creativity Ruslan Khasanov! So follow along ...

Fonts, lettering and typography surf THREE

We always meet some awesome talents during the Fonts Festival ... as we do all year long. The next talents were actually suggested by DTG readers throughout the year. We often ask for your suggestions, tips and favorites -- and while we sadly don't get a lot of response, we have gotten some real winners. These are just a few examples of some of the visits we'll be making along this year's surf. * Courtney Jeanette; * Julia Ruetten; Design and creativity * Erik Marinovich; and Design and creativity * The wonderful world of Karen To! So follow along ...

How can you pass this up?

P22 respecting traditional typography values with today technology

We've been friends with Jimy Chambers and the P22 fonts foundry for nearly 20 years! We've discussed article ideas, looked at antique fonts, and exchanged countless emails. I've come to respect Jimy and the P22 gang for their interest in preserving the true principles and values of typography and font design.

60-Seconds #156 : Freelancing Pitfalls

I first published this article in 1996, and then updated and brushed it up in 2001. I was reading an online article by someone else the other day and it copied this article almost word-for-word. So, I thought I would remind everyone that good business practices really don't go out of style -- this is just as valid as it was more than 20 years ago!

PART ONE ... keep watching for PART TWO

With the Fall Fonts Festival under way, we'll be adding new items all through the month, and into October. It'll be fun, and don't forget to share your favorite type and font comments!

The BAD NEWS : The first six years of the fonts fest were build with HTML #1 web pages, and 256 color 640-by-480 monitor depths. 100% of the links in the first 8 years of the fest have gone dead. People just think nothing of letting their links go dead. So, unfortunately we can only go back to #10 or so -- and even then, more than half of the links are dead and Google is penalizing us for those pages. But hey, when Google has been online in excess of 25 years, like the Design Center, maybe they will have learned some manners. Maybe not.

We'll probably get started on the Holiday season during October as well, so get your thinking cap ready to share holiday and seasonal tips, tricks and promotions for November and December.

GO September is brought to you by the letter "S"

And, as for this month, well, you've already wasted a perfectly good hour reading the DTG newsletter. Hopefully all is not wasted and you've gained at least one helpful tidbit of info.

Thanks for reading
