21st Annual Fall Fonts Festival

We're off and running on the 21st annual Fall Fonts Festival, and having a great time! Do you LOVE fonts? What's in YOUR Fonts list? Suggest a font... suggest a type site... share your favorite downloadable font... show us your latest type, logo, lettering or typography masterpiece -- if we think it's cool, we'll send you a gift, just for participating.

Meet Doyald Young, Logotype Designer and Typographer

This is a wonderful visit with Doyald Young, Logotype Designer -- this is required viewing for all designers and typographers, or anyone involved in the field of visual communications.
Please allow time to watch this all the way to the end. You'll be very glad you did. Unfortunately, Doyald Young passed away in 2011, one of the great typographers of our time.Meet Doyald Young, Logotype Designer and Typographer

Most recommended, top quality fonts for Designers

There are "freebie" fonts lists, and 'freebie' fonts replicator sites coming out the ying-yang. Very few will talk about commercial fonts -- but folks, I'm here to tell'ya the commercial fonts are almost always far, far ahead in terms of quality. Some of the free fonts sites have good looking stuff, but your download them and end up with a mess on your hands. Well, not true of these -- we can stake our reputation on these fonts -- and can guarantee you'll like the way you look when you use them!

21st Annual Fonts Festival : fonts, lettering and typography surf #1

Here we go kicking off the twenty-first annual fonts festival. Kind of hard to believe we started this in 1994! Where were you in 1994? My favorite part of the annual fonts fest is just searching for cool entries and resources to share with the DT&G readers! 21st Annual Fonts Festival : fonts, lettering and typography surf #1

21st Annual Fonts Festival : fonts, lettering and typography surf #2

This issue visits two distinctively different creative resources in typography -- first, we'll meet Casey Ligon and her wonderfully fresh type and lettering designs, then move on to a striking poster by Franz Werner! 21st Annual Fonts Festival : fonts, lettering and typography surf #3

When we first started the Fonts Fest some twenty-one years ago, we mainly concentrated on fonts. There were hardly any good free fonts. So we focused on bringing fonts to the design community. Today, there are fonts everywhere -- so now we look at the creative side of using fonts and actually creating our own typography by hand. Video training for type, typography, lettering and more

After about a decade of fonts festivals -- once YouTube became main stream -- videos about type, calligraphy, lettering and typography began to become available on the web! For the past four years or so videos on the subject have proliferated -- today there are tens of thousands of videos online all about typography. Some are just typing with music. Many are instructional. Here are just a few we've picked out for this year's venue -- but offer a lot of opportunities once you begin to discover their authors. Typography arts : How to know if a font sucks

How to know if a font sucks?? THREE DECADES AGO, with the advent of electronic publishing and nouveau design practitioners, many either didn't know basic typography, or they didn't care to remember. The roots of type and typography are evidenced in every letter we see. We're taught at a very young age to recognize letterforms. It's a basic common denominator in our society. Creative tidbits 194 ~ The Web from good to bad to ugly and back again -

The web design world has gone through some crazy ups and downs in its short 20 year lifetime. It started lean and clean because there was no bandwidth, and the software was so slow. We were connecting on 400-baud modems over dialup. You remember that -- but where's it all going? We don't know, but we'll sure have a good time getting there! Amazingly, a number of readers follow my life on FaceBook, Instagram and Twitter, and have asked why I use the "Here we are" theme in my photo albums.

So, I'll share it with all of you:
