Laura Smith : Ten Years Later
While putting together this issue, I revisited some of our other past winners, and to my shock, most of Laura's links had gone dead! Oh NO! We featured Laura back in 2005 and since her links are all dead, it's time to see if she's still alive . . . she sure is, and you should not miss her!
Fabulous illustrations; classic color palettes; soft texturing; stylish drawings -- posters, stamps, ads, billboards for some of the most prestigious clients in the world -- we cannot say too many good things about
I fixed the links and added a slide show for : Laura Smith 2005

Janet is the real deal
We love to re-visit past Designing Women and this is one of our all-time favorites. . . in 2008, we discovered Janet A .... she's STILL the real deal! At the age of 19 she was already working, and at the same time practicing her skills as an illustrator, for General Motors, as an automotive "job shop" (as they called them). After 5 years she was given the opportunity to work on an Apple computer the company bought after they realized, they needed to move from hand drawn technical pages to digital.
I worked on the very first versions of Adobe’s Illustrator and Photoshop! I loved working on the computer creating illustrations and page layouts! Sometimes my boss would have to remind me it was time to go home ... Growing up in Detroit, I remember always doing something creative with clay (or Play-Doh), paint, pencils and crayons. I'd spend hours drawing cartoon's of my dog Spike or practicing character styles referencing my "How to Draw" books.
During Jr. and high school, Janet took all available art classes and was accepted into a commercial art class in 11th grade. But can you believe this :
I did well in that class but didn't love the whole idea of graphic design... yet.
Daniela Uhlig is Tank Girl
We stumbled on Daniela's blog and were met with the typical Blogger warning of Adult content. Seriously? From her digs in Germany she weilds a mighty brush with some rather thrilling results. She currently works for a big (unnamed) company, but continues to create awesome work as a freelance.
Daniela is master of light, dark, angle and situation. Scroll her blog and wonder what was she thinking! danielauhlig.blogspot.com ... See below for an exquisite example of art nouveau design and typography with her unmistakable touch!
