GDUSA Reader Survey: Stock Imagery is a Designer's Best Friend

Creative inspiration

Graphic Design USA has released an annual survey of more than 1,000 readers which indicates that use of stock imagery has grown nearly three times in just 25 years, starting at 39 percent in 1986 and reaching 98 percent in 2012.
      The survey also shows that 31 percent of designers are in a full-blown love affair, using stock images over 100 times a year, which is up 11 percent from last year.

This is New York: Massimo Vignelli on Childhood, Discipline, and Design

Creative inspiration

NEW YORK Massimo Vignelli, the mastermind behind the logos of American Airlines and United Colors of Benetton, is known as the "grandfather of graphic design."
      He is a problem-solver who finds solutions through innovative design; he is also the creator of New York's iconic 1972 subway map.

Legend: Harry Potter's Graphic Designers Launch Fine Art Prints

Now Harry Potter fans can to add fine art to their collection.
      Miraphora Mina and Eduardo Lima, the graphic design duo behind the graphic props for the eight Harry Potter films, have just launched The Printorium, a limited edition series based on their collaborative work since meeting on the Harry Potter set in 2001.

The PANTONE SkinTone Guide was created by scientifically measuring thousands of actual skin tones across the full spectrum of human skin types. Specially formulated to be the closest physical representations of skin colors, the library is a comprehensive visual reference of human skin tones for use in any market where skin colors are relevant.

A Deluge of Design

Art has to move you and design does not, unless it's a good design for a bus," the artist David Hockney once said.
      Yet good graphic design can be informative, persuasive -- and sometimes even moving. "The Phaidon Archive of Graphic Design," a new $235 box set with 500 12-by-10-inch cards, surveys some of the highlights over the past 600 years. Each card features a classic image -- including ads, logos, posters, packaging design, money and magazine covers -- along with some background.
