What ever happened to GIF89a?

Dear DTG,
You talk about "Compuserve" gifs, and the GIF 89 filter,
but I don't see them in Photoshop.
What do I need to download to get those?

Believe it or not, it's there...

At level 5.5 Photoshop decided to remove the Compuserve Gif format as well as the Gif89. In fact, in the new Photoshop you won't be able to open either form unless you've got the right plug-ins.

Many people became quite handy and therefore quite attached to the Gif89a Export Filter in Photoshop. Many agree that even today with Photoshop's "Save for Web" that the 89a format actually does a better job.

Good news though, you can find it still hiding on the Photoshop CD, in the "Extras" folder. Just search the CD for the word "Gif89a" and it will pop right up. If you have the v5.5, v5, v4 CDs you find it there too. Move it into your Photoshop directory at:

Adobe Photoshop 6.0 > Plug-Ins > Import/Export: GIF89a Export

If you want to read and write CompuServe Gifs, then get the:

Adobe Photoshop 6.0 > Plug-Ins > File Formats > CompuServe GIF

Now you can open or drag-n-drop CIS gif files directly into Photoshop.

Hope this helped.

And that's that. We invite you to stop in and enjoy Mr. Pixelsmith's color columns in DTG, or in his directory in the WebDesign & Review department at the Design Center. If you have questions about color, just let us know.
