When I know the photo will need tweaking, I’ll just create a new layer and either feather it or make it a gradient layer.
... Here we select the rough shape we need to isolate the object. If feathering is desired, we set it now.
... By inverting the selection the background can be filled, and the feathered selection now becomes a hole in the layer that we can see through. This example could have just as easily been a white or color background.
... Now it’s a simple matter to select the underlying layer and move the photo around until it is positioned perfectly in the feathered hole.
... If you try this you can experiment with another trick too. Feathering is based on a split on either side of the selection.

So an 8-pixel feather will blend 4-pixels on either side of the selection. If you fill again, you’ll see the feather tighten. But sometimes feathering is too harsh, or removes too much of the usable image.
