Optimizing auto shots for the web
- Get the right shots
Here are some brief tips for making your product look more glamorous.
- 1. Make sure the item is well lighted
You would not want to shoot the vehicle as we did in sample #1 because it's shaded. Rather walk around, or reposition the car until it is evenly lighted.
- 2. Make the shot match the "Personality" of the car
This car is a svelte, low, sports car. So we wanted to shoot it with the actual horizon line at the roof line or just above. This makes the vehicle look smaller, closer to the ground, and therefore "faster." In example #3, we've photographed this tough boy with the horizon in mid vehicle. Shooting it thusly makes the vehicle look bigger and tougher. Getting in close exaggerates the foremost corner making it even more formidable looking. Apropos for an off-road, 4-wheel drive utility.
- 3. Suggest what the car does
in shot #2 of the red T-Bird, we've moved in close and shot from the rear. The exaggerated proportions visually suggest a close/far relationship. The posture also suggests it is moving away from us... ZOOM: the only view of the car other motorists will see. (I'm not kidding here, this kind of vehicle is between $39,000 and $49,000 and needs to appeal to the viewer on another level beyond price or a "good deal")
- 4. Show enough
Shot #1 will be our main shot, however we'll inset shots 2 and 3 into #1 so that our viewer can get a good feeling as soon as the image loads.
By show "enough," I mean to pick another shot that will give the viewer a completely different second impression. Here we've selected the stylish interior of the vehicle. However note, we'll take the second version because it's more fully lighted, and the angle shows more of the accoutrements than the first. The reader can also get a feeling for how 'clean' the vehicle is.
By all means offer full sized versions of these shots linked at another location on the web, so they can dig in. Particularly the interior shot. They need to see if the carpet has stains or the seats are torn. (Obviously not here!)
