Reading this article about Photoshop selection tools, I learned about all three tools: marquee, lasso, and magic wand -- located on your tool palette. Marquee is used to make pefect squares, circles, and ovals. You can add the selected areas by holding the shift key and you can subtract the area by holding down the ALT key. The lasso lets you draw selection paths freehand. You can also draw polygons with this tooland add and subtract areas by using the Shift and ALT keys. The lasso is great for deatailed work on any subject matter where you can add pixels etc. Posted on 1/19/2004 - Photoshop Selection Tools
I have taken digital photography, and am fairly familiar with Photoshop in a very primitive way. I know the tools and can get the end product that I want, but the tutorial, just on those three tools, taught me much more than I knew previously. I did not know the little keyboard commands that allowed you to use the tools much more effectively. Such as using the spacebar or the Alt key to get the point of origin correct. I also had no idea that just by hitting the alt key and moving the object it would be duplicated or that by holding shift when moving things they would move horizontally. I never really used the magic wand tool before and did not realize that you could change the tolerance etc. The lasso tool is fairly straight forward but I did not realize you could combine the different types of lasso to use on one object. The selection tools are the first step to making alterations to your picture or design. The marquee tool is used for regular shaped area, the lasso for irregular shaped area, and the magic wand for colored area. The lasso tool and the polygon lasso tool are opposites of eachother. One draws freehand and can be forced to draw straight lines, and the other one does the counter actions of that. after you have selected your area with one of these tools you can use other tools and filters. This site also gives me more of a means to go about building on my existing knowledge of photoshop... not to mention thinkdan isn't allowed, and WastedYouth.org shut down. This site describes all the selection tools, including the Marquee, Magic Wand, and Lasso Tools. It is a very basic page, with three colors. The marquee tool allows anyone to select a particular area. The magic wand allows anyone to select an area based on the color. The lasso tool allows for freehand selections to be made. Because of the examples, and the easy to read text it allows the viewer to understand the meaning and uses of the tools quickly. Being a novice to graphic design and to the program Photoshop I understand these tools better and will save this pdf file until I can remember the information perminently. It would have been easier if there were more images describing things, however. This site also doesn't talk about all the hidden tools that are found within the icons. Posted on 1/19/2004 - Heathrowe.com Photoshop Magic Wand Tutorials
This tutorial, one of many offered by PSDesigns on Photoshop 7, focused on teaching the user the "magic wand" tool. An example photograph was used with a fairly large amount of blue sky. The ‘magic wand’ tool’s function was demonstrated by selecting only the sky area in the photograph. However, some regions were left out of the first selection, and the tutorial goes on to teach the user how to subsequently include these left out areas by using the marquee tool and the shift key to add them to the current selection. I found this tutorial to be extremely well done and effective as a teaching tool. Posted on 1/19/2004 - IceHouse Designs
I found out the marquee tools are used for many different things in photoshop. There are four other options under the marquee tool including, rectangular, elliptical, single row, and single column. The marquee's are used generally for selecting areas of the image, or to draw shapes. The Lasso tool is a freeform selection tool used to select objects or areas of ones choice. It contains two other options under it including, polygonal lasso tool and the magnetic lasso tool. The magic wand tool is used to select colors similar to the pixel clicked. This will allow you to select areas of the same color. Overall I found out that all three of these tools are used for selecting objects or areas of ones choice but each have their different techniques to accomodate the user. I learned that there are many ways of selecting parts of images with a variety of tools. There are different types of Marquee tools. There is the rectangular, elliptical, single row, and single Marquee tools. the Marquee is usually used for geometric selections. The Lasso consists of the polygonal and magnetic tool. It is used to select parts of an image by freehand. The Magic Wand is used for selecting pixels that are common in color and that are next to each other. Clic on the color that you want to select you and to add more pixels press Shift and click the areas at the same time. All of these tools discussed here can smooth rough edges which is named Anti-aliasing. The Marquee and Lasso can be used for feathering unclear edges on images. To add a selection with the Marquee or Lasso buttons use the Shift key while selecting. To subtract selected areas hold down the Alt (Option) key while drawing around what you want to deselect. All of these selection tools are vital in knowing how to use Photoshop. Posted on 1/19/2004 - U of Idaho.edu: Photoshop Selection Tools

Here is some of the information that I learned about the icons in Photoshop. The Marquee allows a specific part of your work to be selected either rectangular, elliptically, or in a single row and single column. It also has a cropping tool that allows you to select a part of the image that you are working on. The Lasso tool allows you to outline part of your work either with pre-made lines (polygon lasso) or freehand (magnetic lasso). Another helpful icon in Photoshop is the Magic Wand tool which allows you to select parts of your work that have similar color pixels. All of the aforementioned tools are very helpful when working in Photoshop, because they make it easy to select and perfect images that you are working on. This site led the student through the different steps in selecting using the Marquee, Magic Wand and Lasso tools. First of all, under each tool are different options. Using the marquee tool, one can use a rectangular, oval, 1 pixel row and column and cropping selection. The selection area can be repositioned by clicking inside it and dragging the area. The lasso can be used to trace a shape in freehand with curves, or with (by holding down Alt/Option) straight lines. One can also select the magnetic lasso which snaps to an object. The fastening buttons which automatically appear can be removed or added. The magic wand tool selects an area by differences in color. The tolerance can be adjusted by selecting the options on the magic wand tool box. This tool is useful for selecting a complicated shape with out having to trace it freehand.
