- Text in Illustrator (UMICH.edu)
The information about text wrap and column making is found in the pages named Text in Illustrator and Saving Your Illustrator File. It talks about the text box, how to warp, and how your text can wrap around an object. It also describes with images how a person can use the path type tool. Posted on 10/4/06

This site tells how to use clipping paths in Illustrator as well as QuarkXPress. It provides a step by step process to clipping paths as well as links to how to make other paths in Illustrator. Posted on Wed Apr 7, 2004 - Lord of the Rings Tutorial (Photoshop)
This tutorial is actually intended for Photoshop, but it was too good to pass up. Besides, its doable with Illustrator. It shows a clever application of wrapping text while working with layers at the same time. The layers are available for download, but after last Wednesday's class on creating the can of lotion, I think you could just start from scratch. The opening paragraph is a little corny. Posted on Sun Apr 11 22:16:27 - OpenType Fonts: Tutorial (Adobe)
This tutorial was very brief, however still informative. Adobe does a good job of walking you through the font selection and a few steps to making your font different from the plain, provided fonts in the font library. Adobe breaks the tutorial up into three easy steps that you can follow along with if you have the Illustrator program at home. Also, there are other tutorials available on the adobe website that educate the viewer on other tips and tricks in Adobe Illustrator. There are many different ways to make a text block and have your text fill a shape. Dragging a box with the Type Tool gives you a text block that can always be edited. If you want your type to fill a specific shape, draw that shape with the path tool or one of the basic shape tools. The words will conform to the shape with the Area Type Tool. To make your type follow a path, draw a path first. Click on the path with the Type Tool and the text will follow the path. Remember, that text blocks can be transformed with any of the transformation tools: Rotate, Reflect, Scale, Skew. Tracking, horizontal and vertical scale, baseline changes, letter spacing, word spacing and kerning are all things to keep in mind when laying out your letters. This site also has directions on how to wrap text around a graphic, but it is too long to list here. Posted on Sun Apr 11 23:05:22 - Working with Type in Illustrator (2)
This site covered everything I need to know about type. It didn't provide visuals or keyboard commands but type seems fairly straight forward so I understood every step that it mentioned. It covered a lot of information and went through everything step by step in logical order. It went from simple uses with type to more complicated like wrapping your type around things and giving hints on how to fix spacing if the type then looks awkward. Good site. Although Im no Yankee's fan, this site does a good job dipicting curved text and other functions. It shows how to convert type to outlines, then curves, and then storke them with color. The end result is a nice Yankee's Baseball logo. Ps... go O's! haha Posted on Mon Apr 12 00:04:20 - Creating Special Text Effects
This tutorial was really useful in teaching me how to manipulate text. It shows ways to add stroke, color, tint, and shadow. Once that is done, you learn how to distort, transform and warp. A very helpful and clearly communicated resource. Posted on Mon Apr 12 00:32:15 - Live Type Effects of Adobe Illustrator
Be aware of the stacking order of items in the Appearance palette. The top-to-bottom order of fills and strokes controls the front-to-back order in which they appear. For effects, the top effect is applied to the artwork before other effects below it in the palette. Also important is where an effect is applied: Effects that are in line with the fills and strokes in the palette are globally applied to an object; an effect that's indented under a fill or stroke in the palette will only affect that fill or stroke. This site is a over view of symbols and there many uses, however is shares how text can be created in varying ways and then placed in a box. Other typography options can be done on the text like cures and warping, or fitting it to a shape. It is then that it can become a symbol for later use, just save it in the symbols pallet.
