Moving banners distract readers in an otherwise great site...

POP-Up Samples: Before, and After

The Author Said:
well i have always liked the a a photo can be manipulated or fixed up and so i decided to make this page and of course it's not all done but the essentials are there. Richie Maldonado

Joyce critiques:

All in all you've done a pretty good job here. there are several things you could do to help improve the users experience and get more clicks and trustfully more business <g>

  1. This home page is a bit busy but I still like the concept. There are a few things that could help though.

  2. There is a bit too much movement between the camera and the banner. Is it a paying banner? If not I'd loose it.

  3. What is Coney Island 2000? I thought maybe it was your company name but it is unclear.

  4. The yellow email clashes with the rest of the design, it would look better the same as the other links. Is email really the most important link? Because of the color it draws your attention first.

  5. Your welcome to my page is difficult to read because of the background activity. Also note the before picture below, this screen shot was taken in Netscape. The first time the text lined up the way you have it in a layer, but each time I came back it looks like this before shot.

  6. Now for your internal pages. I think the rather busy design can work for the home page but not for the interior. Here it is too much. To keep with the theme, you could keep your black side image and links and maybe put your samples inside of picture frames.

Here is a quick sample I did without the banner, and the text moved. I also changed the Email (wrong font).
__ As you can see, I didn't change much, you have a decent page. The one other thing I'd work on is the links. They are a bit blurry and the font size changes. I like the layout of the buttons, maybe a smoother curve with a sharper font. You could even play with a different color for the button or for the text and see what works.
__ When you have it done, sit back and notice where your eyes go first. Is it where you want your potential customers focus?
Where do your eyes go next?

The load time is a bit slow. Your page weighs in at 89kbs. The camera animation alone is 50kb. I'd suggest trying to get this lowered if you can.

Keep up the great work and happy HTMLing.

Fred says:

Excellent comments, Joyce.
I too thought it was a big busy for the subject matter... particularly the interior pages.
__ I liked much of the content I found in the site... I believe folks would enjoy it too, and I see no reason not to let Richie's interesting content drive this site. Overhead just gets in the way.
Stay in touch, Richie.
