Web Design & Critique for web page make-overs and design tips & tricks

It's the newspaper biz...

Las Vegas Review Journal is a top notch newspaper... their site needs work though... Do you ever arrive at a website and get this sort of queasy feeling... you know, like your browser is going to crash any moment. Do you stay? Do you ... quick ... hit the back button?

__ That's sort of how we felt when we visited the Las Vegas Review-Journal for a review. After the first few pages, we begin to feel like we were being beaten up.
Checking the page info file, we confirm our wounds, because the page caches out at 144K! The download meter says 44 seconds... but it feels like hours.
__ True to form of newspapers, the LVRJ has spanked us with an incredible array of things to do and stuff to see. Way too many in fact. Too many content items, far too many links and enough little unrelated ads and unnecessary gif graphics to last us the rest of the week.
__ The content and quality of journalism in this site is certainly on the par of any newspaper site we've visited in the country. But we're pounded by rows of buttons across the top, a stack of more buttons down the side, and yet another selection of links in little holes down the page.
Is it too much? Thank goodness they have a search field. If I were a regular reader, I'd go there with graphics off and hit just the search field for what I was interested in. The problem is, we tried a number of key words, and all returned a "page not found" with the exception of weather. And if you've ever been to Las Vegas you know that all you have to do is look out the window to get the weather.
__ I don't want to wreck this site though -- it's typical newspaper design, and if you wander any of those links, then things calm down considerably.
Continues...
