Search Engine Secrets - Web Design & Review

There are lots and lots... these are others we tested...

Search Specialty Houses

Webliography -- http://www.lib.lsu.edu/weblio.html
There are subtle depths lurking at Louisiana State University Library's guide to Internet resources. If your subject suggests technical journals or multiple-language dictionaries, this one's for you. Academic only, wonderfully spam free.

SightSeer -- http://www.imana.com/WebObjects/Siteseer/
Siteseer wins the award for the most elegant and the most unique. IMANA.com invites you to set up a "personal space" and let the Siteseer agent build an index of links based on your wishes. Very elegantly built, spam free, worth the trip just to see the layout. Nice novelty.

WWWomen -- http://www.wwwomen.com/
Although you get tripple-spammed, WWWomen is highly recommended as the net's largest content by and for women.

Magellan-- http://www.mckinley.com/
The McKinley Group's search engine is nicely designed and spam free. Heavy on business, so not for general searching.

Junk Yard of the Net -- http://www.winbet.sci.fi/junkyard/
You're not going to believe this one (we call it "geek-look") a carry-over from the old days on the Web. This is not officially what you would call a search engine, but rather a collection of sites arranged in categories. The Junk Yard very deep, but most of all, it's fun. You should try it at least once.

DisInformation -- http://www.disinfo.com/
DisInformation will amaze you. It boasts 30 million documents -- with a twist: the 'dark side' of the web. They pride themselves in their subversive, weird, off-the-wall and hidden materials. In other words, all the stuff you wouldn't ordinarily be looking for. Our reviewers had very mixed opinions on this one from very cool to out-right disgust. The main page is very busy and not recommended for the bandwidth challenged. I thought the design was very chic, but animation overkill.

LinkMaster -- http://linkmaster.com/
This is one of the more weird sites for searching and may appeal to some people. It is so rude, and so spam-ridden that I recommend against using it. NONE of our search inquiries could get through due to all the animation on the page. When we arrived, the ad banner said: "SHOCKING! What else lives in your body?" Yes, we were shocked. They call it the "Cool Search" but it's not.

If you have a favorite search engine, let us know. We love discovering new resources on the nets.
