Welcome to 2011

I’m running a little late this month because I just got back from 12 days on the north coast of Africa. So, we’re playing a bit of catch-up, and battling a frozen cold January. This month, old mixes with new … enjoy!

2010 in Photos

As the end of 2010 draws near, we wanted to share with you the most iconic images of the year. For the first time ever, Getty Images has released a digital edition of their annual Year In Focus … with some rather spectacular images!

2011 Search Predictions

This may be the big year of change for searching, search advertising, paid links, and even getting YOUR content found in the major search engines. They’re tightening the throttles to search LESS content in favor of more ‘vaulable’ content — in other words, content searches they can SELL. Here is Greenlight’s Top 10 Search Predictions for 2011

2011 CES Round-up

Here’s your round-up for this year’s Comsumer Electronics Show — which had some awesome new advancements and gizmos… * Keynotes From Verizon, Audi And Samsung… Ford, Cisco, Ge, Xerox and The Entertainment Community top the headlines … and we wrap with Innovation And Optimism! 3-page article!

Photoshop Madness: One Last Time

Two editions of Photoshop Madness: our last for 2010, I talk about the celebrations and disappointments of 2010, and relish in the talents of * Henrik Newstream, a Dreamer of rare imagery, * the stunning, over-the-top images of Natascha Roosli, * incredible self portrait photography by Levi Van Veluw, * Fabian Warnke’s daring images, and * One Last Time with Steven Stahlberg and his Android Blues. We also see Brittany after some evil Photoshop madness! Happy New Year from everyone at Photoshop Tips & Tricks and Photoshop 911!

Photoshop Madness: Visions

In this edition of Photoshop Madness we visit * Viet-My’s astonishing visions, * Mads Berg’s Art Deco Revival visual treat, * 51 Breathtaking Post-Apocalypse Wallpapers, * Cynthia Pedrosa’s Fractal Portfolio, and the truly awesome works of * Till Nowak. We also bump into a Photoshop shovelware site that ripps off other’s creative works then disclaims them in their policy. It’s a jungle out there, but as always, we bring you the best in the world of Photoshop Madness

The Complete Manual of Typography

George Engel is back to the pages of DTG, with a little bit about type, fonts and typography with the newest edition of The Complete Manual of Typography

Print Brokering

I had a good discussion the other day with a young, new designer in the area. When asked how I survived the client’s reluctance to pay a lot for creative, my answer is build it into the job and charge for the job. I covered creative that the client wouldn’t pay for with print brokering. I bought the printing at a deep discount from the printer, marked it up, and sold it to the client. You can do the same by using Print Safari. Call around your local area and get quotes from printers — then compare them to Print Safari prices. You’ll see the difference will be a nice little 15% to 25% commission for YOU! Check’em out and order the samples kit at :

ePub Straight to the Point

George gets his book “Naked Serviceman” up to Amazon and takes a good look at a new book that will help everyone publish their works in Apple’s store, Amazon’s Kindle, and others that support the eReaders and eBooks. Two part series :

Mailbag: A new year of graphic design

Special thanks to S.B., a web design professional in Huntley, IL, who shares this with you:

> I found http://usability.gov/
absolutely invaluable. It is
> a government site especially for government web designers,
> but it has information on everything you need to create
> useful and USABLE websites. They provide step by step help
> to create a user friendly site and one that is
> accessible to everyone.

Thanks to S.B.! Yes, a very valuable resource for all.

Then, C.D. from San Bernardino CA sent in these three:

> * TweetMyImage allows you to post your images to Twitter.
> * Flip PDF: allows you to batch build professional flash
> flip Books from PDF files.
> * Facebook Friends Checker: enables you easily to see list
> of people who are no longer friends with you since
> the last time you checked.

Thanks to everyone who sends in tips, comments or references of some value and benefit to DTG readers. Unfortunately for every good one we get, there are 100 who either say nothing, or want to sell us something.

Like S.B., and C.D. above, send in your content of value and we’re happy to send you a gift package just to say thanks! And when S.B. and C.D. send their mailing addresses — there will be a nice gift pack going out to them!

January is brought to you by the letter “J”

This month however, we’re a bit puzzled about the color. The DayGlo Color Corp.’s Brand Action Team is telling us that the one color to watch in 2011 is Magenta! On the other hand, the Pantone color of the year is HONEYSUCKLE, and we’ve got an upcoming article on that from Wausau Paper company. So watch for that. All in all, though, I think the January color should be icy blue — for COLD!

The Loading Dock has been updated, with some awesome art, and the holiday warehouse is closed for another year. Don’t forget to send in your contributions!

Have a great month, and stay in touch.

      Thanks for reading…

Thought for January:
The world communications net, the all-involving linkage of electric
circuitry, will grow and become more sensitive. It will also develop new modes
of feedback so that communication can become dialogue instead of monologue. It
will breach the wall between ‘in’ and ‘out’ of school. It will join all people
everywhere.
