September... school, fonts, new server

Here we are with another autumn upon us. Autumn of 2000 won’t be like any other autumn for the Design Center. . .
.
In with the new server!
Since the first of the year, you know we’ve been experiencing a lot of growing pains. With that come technology pains. The raided hard drives, memory and muscle added to the G4 Mac server wowed us with its pure computing muscle. However the software didn’t keep up.
__ Troubled with months of agony over Tenon’s Net Ten and Web Ten server software, we’ve decided to throw in the hat. Being the most recommended of only two server packages for the Mac, Tenon runs perfectly well, but when something goes wrong (as it will in these times of technology,) it’s almost impossible to fix without hundreds of man-hours and frustration.
.
Welcome to our new Cobalt server.
Good friend and colleague Dan Sailers had been running a Cobalt for over a year without a hitch and recommended we look into it. We did, and we liked what we discovered. This baby rocks.
__ The neat thing about Cobalt is it’s not a computer. Well it is, but it’s a highly specialized computer with only one purpose: to serve web sites. So, rather than wasting cpu muscle and clock speeds on doing other things that computers usually do, the Cobalt is designed and software equipped to do the complete job of web serving. That’s all. And we’ve discovered it does that job very, very well!
__ So, that’s why you’ve had interrupted service, mail bouncing, and woes -- and that’s why those problems seem to be over! Whew!
.
Too much for this column...
I’m not going into all the cool stuff that’s been pent up since our July edition. August content was fully web based while we worked on the new server -- and there’s a ton of new content now flowing into the Design Center for the fall. So you'll just have to keep your eyes on the NEWSLETTER.
.
Publishers’ Warehouse Reopens
Yup... it’s back! All of more than 7,000 inquiries about the Warehouse being down can now rest assured it’s back and all our new font additions are there. You’ll need a Loading Dock admission slip to get in, but it’s free, fun, and filling. Get your hard drives ready. (He says with a sly grin.)
.
Stay tuned... October will be even bigger yet! Have fun.

Fred

PS:
Folks, we can’t help you if you don’t cooperate...
This month, more than 200 accesses (looking for that new EPS clip art disk) were denied to the Publishers’Warehouse because the email address keyed into the UserID/Password request was incorrect, or no longer in use. I find it hard to believe that people would register for something and then drop the address.
. . . How do you expect us to send you the UserID/Password if you give us a non-working email address. Yes, it is an automated listbot and it sends the info if your mail is correct. We are alerted of "bounces" and this month I followed up with EACH one ... getting the same bounce results.
. . . If you were rejected, then please try again and use a properly formatted and functioning email address. Remember: no spaces, correct spelling. Dozens of AOL users didn't put in "@aol.com" -- remember: name@aol.com, no spaces. (We assume they were AOL since they had no "@" indicator.)
. . . Remember too, that once you arrive at the "Warehouse" you MUST key in the ID and Password EXACTLY as was sent to you, upper and lower case, etc. We recommend you use the number row on your keyboard rather than the keypad for numbers. For some reason there has been problems with some users where the number row worked when the keypad didn't. Strange, eh?
Now... if you don't get your ID and password within say an hour or so, then something's wrong. Send me an email at: showker@graphic-design.com, and I'll take care of you.
