- You may think I'm crazy for starting our Holiday specials in
October, but just maybe I'm not.
October, November and December are jam packed with holidays. Besides the traditional
ones, there's some not-so-traditional ones you may not know about.
__ Remember that October is Computer Learning Month,
Breast Cancer Control Month, and Child Health Month -- as it is Healthy Lung Month,
Diversity Awareness Month, Auto Battery Safety Month, and National Car Care Month.
Japan is celebrating JAPAN Newspaper Week this week, so let's hear it for the Japanese
newspaper designers. Nigeria celebrated its Independence and Korea celebrated its
Armed Forces Day on the 1st. Guinea celebrated its Independence day on the 2nd.
__ Of course you know that the 31st is All Hallow's
Eve (Halloween), but did you know that in Taiwan it will be Chiang Kai-Shek Day and
in Sweden it will be All Saints' Day? Sure, you knew that.
__ So you see, it is rather appropriate to begin our
holiday series this month after all.
All month long, the Publishers' Warehouse folks will be celebrating the birth anniversary
of Ethel Waters, (1896) the famous blues singer who billed herself as Sweet Mama
Stringbean, wowing audiences in clubs and on Broadway with such hits as: Blackbirds
and Rhapsody in Black. That all takes place in Chester PA.
- Will dot-coms fail again?
- You remember last year there were hundreds of thousands of disappointed people
out there who put off their shopping until the last minute thinking they'd just go
online and do it all in an afternoon? The dot-coms (feeling quite big about themselves)
didn't anticipate the demand -- and made a lot of unhappy shoppers. According to
Business 2.0 magazine, it's estimated that 6 billion dollars will be transacted online
during November and December of this year, so just maybe you'll want to get ahead
of the curve with your Christmas shopping.

- BEST Bets for the 2000 Holiday Season
- What will be the hottest items this holiday season for the computer user? Digital
cameras and mobile, personal information managers, (PIMs) of course! So in the Design
Center we'll be featuring Gifts for the Mobile Warrior! This will be the year of
the PALM and Palm-top computing so if you've got a road warrior on your list, this
will be an important stop. Here's the
way. Who else?
.
- Digital Camera Users -- of course!
- There will be thousands of digital cameras under the tree this year, not to mention
the hundreds of thousands from previous years. Most digital camera users will really
appreciate our special section on gifts for the shutter-bug. See this month's Technique
column about SmartMedia for digital cameras. In the Design Center, we've selected
just the cream of the crop from the digital photography book department -- from $12.99
to $39.95. Here's the way.
But what else?
.
- Software boxes filled with air?
- Next best bet for the computer user? Manuals, of course! Remember opening that
(suspiciously light) software box to find a shiny new CD-ROM, accompanied only by
air? David Pogue and O'Reilly Books have teamed up to bring your computer user a
superb line-up of "Missing Manuals" -- the ones that were supposed to be
in the box! . Here's the way.
But what else?
.
- Publishers' Warehouse opens EPS Clip Art section
- Yup... slowly those guys are getting their act together, hooking up the clip
art libraries. This month? Some truly great RETRO HALLOWEEN clip art. If you don't
know the directions to the Loading Dock, you can request them at the Publishers'
Warehouse home page
So folks, it's going to be a great month. Keep those cards and letters coming, and
have a great time. Don't forget to join in the fun at Sweet Mama Stringbean's
birthday celebration all month long in Chester, PA.
Fred
PS: also remember that the Design Center is (sad to report) now case sensitive. (He
says with a sheepish grin!)

PS:
Folks, we can’t help you if you don’t
cooperate...
This month, more than 200 accesses (looking for that new EPS clip art disk) were
denied to the Publishers’Warehouse because the email address keyed into the UserID/Password
request was incorrect, or no longer in use. I find it hard to believe that people
would register for something and then drop the address.
. . . How do you expect us to send you the UserID/Password if you give us a non-working
email address. Yes, it is an automated listbot and it sends the info if your mail
is correct. We are alerted of "bounces" and this month I followed up with
EACH one ... getting the same bounce results.
. . . If you were rejected, then please try again and use a properly formatted and
functioning email address. Remember: no spaces, correct spelling. Dozens of
AOL users didn't put in "@aol.com" -- remember: name@aol.com, no spaces.
(We assume they were AOL since they had no "@" indicator.)
. . . Remember too, that once you arrive at the "Warehouse" you MUST key
in the ID and Password EXACTLY as was sent to you, upper and lower case, etc. We
recommend you use the number row on your keyboard rather than the keypad for numbers.
For some reason there has been problems with some users where the number row worked
when the keypad didn't. Strange, eh?
Now... if you don't get your ID and password within say an hour or so, then something's
wrong. Send me an email at: showker@graphic-design.com,
and I'll take care of you.
