As I watch snow gently falling on Crokas bulbs beginning to peek out of the soil,
I’m trying to get myself into the spring spirit. March, of course is supposed to
be the beginning of spring, but it just doesn’t seem that way. I guess it’s fitting
that the vernal equinox takes place in March for the Northern Hemisphere, bringing
with it the first day of spring. Of course for those of you reading in the Southern
Hemisphere, it’s the first day of Autumn. Where did February go?
March, the month for money, success, fresh growth and women.
Forget for a moment about St. Patrick’s Day. In 1910, Clara Zetkin, speaking at an
international women’s conference in Helsinki, declared March 8th as “International
Working Women’s Day” in commemoration of the day in 1857 when female garment workers
in New York City marched in protest of low wages and bad working conditions. For
those of you in the arts, it’s “Music in Our Schools Month” and “National Crafts
Month.” For those of you into doing good, it’s “American Red Cross Month” and “Mental
Retardation Awareness Month,” -- the first week is “Help Someone See Week.” For pet
owners it’s “National Professional Pet Sitters Month” and March 1st is “Pig Day.”
For Parents, it’s “National Talk To Your Teens About Sex Month.” For all computer
software and support companies out there, it’s “National On-Hold Month” to recognize
everyone who has been placed on hold. Speaking of on hold... where would we be if
it weren’t for March 10.
__ Think about this for a minute: on March 10, 1867,
in the town of Cambridge, Ma, Alexander Graham Bell called his assistant in the next
room “Mr. Watson, come here, I want you...” making it the very first telephone call
in history! Alex was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and was also responsible for the
substantial refinement of Edison’s phonograph, and the first successful phonograph
record.
__ The Publishers’ Warehouse folks said “Whoa... the
first ever phone call?” They piled into the VW Van yesterday, headed for Cambridge.
__ This month is LETTERS month in DT&G Magazine
online aside from lots of other things happening as well. We want to catch up on
the mail and take care of some of those urgent ones.

Each month accesses (looking for that new EPS clip art disk) and prize registrations
are denied in the Publishers’Warehouse.
__ Why? Because the email address keyed into the Loading
Dock request was incorrect, or no longer in use. I find it hard to believe that people
would register for something and then drop the address.
__ Remember: no spaces, correct spelling. Dozens
of AOL users didn't put in "@aol.com" -- remember: name@aol.com, no spaces.
(We assume they were AOL since they had no "@" indicator.)
__ Remember too, that the loading dock changes locations
each month. You'll find the clue you need to the new location in each issue of this
column.
