Letter from the editor for DT&G Online Newsletter, in The Design & Publishing Center * Last Month's Editor's Column

May is "Creativity Month"
"Date Your Mate"

MAY is brought to you by the color Burgundy
(note how it turns into mauve and 'rose' when tinted!)

.
Why DT&G PDF edition was so late this month.
.
Welcome to May. Sorry, it's the third already, but we're running just a tad behind this month.
We're not in the second week of trying to get upgraded computers functioning properly. We upgraded to the last Mac OS before OS/X, and thought everything would be okay. We were forced to give up our previous program for producing DT&G and move it over to PageMaker 6.5 which we use occasionally.
__ We were forced to upgrade and replace Adobe ATM, as well as upgrade, then obtain a "fix" for Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Acrobat Distiller. We did default installations and when the May DT&G was distilled to the PDF file it looked like this miserable example of "default" settings.
__ So we worked and worked with the color settings, and read the books, etc., and the best we could get looks like Thismiserable mess. Here's what the actual file is supposed to look like.
__ You see our carefully prepared "Burgundy" HEX samples (above, right) for the month of May? Well this (at right) is what Adobe thinks those colors are supposed to look like. Notice that Acrobat also did us the favor of enlarging the image for some reason. The burgundy example above is the actual graphic used to distill. And this is through PageMaker 6.5 and Adobe's OWN PDF extractor.

On with the show: May is Creativity Month!
.
Here we are and it's Creativity Month... you'll want to enjoy Cartoon Appreciation week, this week, and celebrate "Creative Beginnings Month" all month long. Enroll in a course, write a poem, paint a painting, launch a social event -- do anything new that will stimulate your creativity. If that's not enough to celebrate, then try: Breathe Easy Month sponsored by the American Lung Association (800) LUNG-USA; Better Sleep Month, sponsored by the Better Sleep Council; National Bike Month with the League of American Bicyclist (www.bikeleague.org); Family Support Month, with CHILD (Children Hurt in Legal Disputes); and the one I like best, Date Your Mate Month where you're invited to make your romance sizzle! Make a real date with your mate during May! Thanks to Rose Smith, President of the Institute of Monogamy in Albuquerque, NM! So if you can, join us in Albuquerque, or just celebrate at home!
.
Congratulations Graduates
.
Each year in May I like to send out a big congratulations to all those graduating in the fields of graphic design, illustration, photography and related fields of communication arts and design. Welcome to the real world of graphic communications. Graduates, family members, friends or relatives reading today take note. We're opening the FOLIO program to those of you who would like to display your works in a Graphic Design Network FOLIO site. Send us your samples and if selected you'll get your own, free, Partner FOLIO in your selection of domains. Very cool. Send an email and tell us where you graduated from, and that you're interested. We'll reply with complete instructions on where and how to proceed. Read some of the details of the program now. Again, congratulations and good luck!

Special Guests for May
.
Here's a big welcome to Bridget Smith, our latest addition to the Designing Women series started in March! Watch for the FOLIO sites to open this month featuring Bridget along with Heather Bellanca, last month's FOLIO. Also this month we welcome Mark DiNubila with his brief but hard-hitting tutorial on Colorizing images in Photoshop.
__ In the weeks of May, welcome special guest columnists in both the Design & Publishing Center, and the Designers' Bookshelf. Joshua Westerholm brings us a report on Flash 5: Virtual Classroom, and Judy Spencer takes a look at the special edition CorelDRAW 10: The Official Guide. Judy and Joshua were introduced to us through the BOOKSTER program, and Josh has already begun his careful evaluation of the Flash 5 Magic Remix book. All of our special guests are available for discussion in the Designers' CAFE.
__ Dr. D'Lynn Waldron's How to use noise in computer art and photo-retouching has been posted in the Photoshop Tips & Tricks department along with Mr Pixelsmith who answers this month's Photoshop for the web question from a reader: Can you set transparency with color range?
__ I'll be looking deeper into the fabulous Photoshop 6 for Photographers, and later in the month we'll hear from Katrin Eismann and her awesome Photoshop Restoration & Retouching. There's lots of great things happening during the spring, so come along and enjoy them all with us.
.
This is NOT the end of the May Newsletter!
Next week we'll be posting all the rest of the content and goodies for May. Again, we were seriously delayed and hindered by all the problems with machine and software in the past two weeks, so we'll be adding the rest later.
.
Here's to YOU, for your happiest May ever! Don't forget Mother's day on the 13th...

Folks, we can’t help you if you don’t cooperate...
Each month accesses (looking for that new EPS clip art disk) and prize registrations are denied in the Publishers’Warehouse.
__ Why? Because the email address keyed into the Loading Dock request was incorrect, or no longer in use. I find it hard to believe that people would register for something and then drop the address.
__ Remember: no spaces, correct spelling. Dozens of AOL users didn't put in "@aol.com" -- remember: name@aol.com, no spaces. (We assume they were AOL since they had no "@" indicator.)
__ Remember too, that the loading dock changes locations each month. You'll find the clue you need to the new location in each issue of this column.
