Hello Summer...
.
Time to attend all those graduations, and weddings... dress the lawn, get ready for vacation, do the gardening, and get away from the desk more often. In the Design Center we've got a great slate of Summer Books just hitting the shelves, and the Designers' Bookshelf will have nearly 150 new books on its shelves by the end of next week.
__ Joyce has been very busy! After taking off a few months to write her new Macromedia FLASH book, she's back with a half-dozen all new reviews!
June is National Safety Month... of course it goes without saying, please be safe during all your summer activities. Be safe at home, in the garden, in the car, and on the web!
__ Also, you can celebrate National Dairy Month and kiss a cow. The second week in June, is National Headache Awareness Week, (National Headache Foundation), as well as National Ergonomics Week. Take a look at how you sit and work at the computer! (http://www.ezu.com)
__ Best of all though, we're celebrating the birthday of the worlds favorite sex symbol, Marilyn Monroe! Marilyn was born in LosAngeles in 1926, and lead a remarkable film career, rising to epitomize Hollywood glamor. So come along with us to LosAngeles, to celebrate Marilyn's birthday all month long!

DT&G is brought to you this month, by the color RED
It's June, and it's going to get hot soon, so RED is our color this month. This sample happens to be PMS #185, which builds with: or Cyan, 0; Magenta: 96; Yellow 76; black 0.
Here we see the closest HEX color recipes, but note that PMS 185 cannot be built on the web! Yikes. (Our table cell header is color #FF0000, our backgorund is a dark red, color #AA0000, and the type you see highlighted in red is color #DD0000.
__ Red says HOT. It's an aggressive color not to be used lightly. It advances on the reader, and looks best when there's lots of it. For dramatic contrast, reverse type out of the red rather than overprinting black. Remember... red is perceived as black in many situations, so be careful. Also, red will be one of the first colors to fade when exposed to ultraviolet light, so you sign makers out there beware.
.
The Cost of Rollovers
Mr. Pixelsmith is running a little project in the Designers' Cafe this month and thought you web designers out there might enjoy looking in on it. We've asked users of all different web authoring software to come in and program a simple, single rollover. We're comparing the size and code of the various programs.
.
Letters this month include:
Which Computer? Mac or PeeCee? How to get your 'design' foot in the door, How to download fonts from the internet Do you need Permission to use clip art? Globally updating huge web sites.

We've also got several dozen new review requests from readers who want YOU to review their sites.

Congratulations Graduates
.
As part of our May/June Graduates program, we send out a big congratulations to all those graduating in the fields of graphic design, illustration, photography and related fields of communication arts and design.
__ Very cool. Send an email and tell us where you graduated from, and that you're interested. Attach up to six (6) thumbnails of recent projects in your portfolio. Make sure they are JPEG files, no greater than 120 pixels in any dimension.
__ We'll reply with complete instructions on where and how to proceed. Again, congratulations and good luck!
.

__ Also this month we welcome Charlotte Lapierre, our first Design School Graduate to be inducted into the FOLIO program. (We'll show you some of her work in this month's DT&G PDF edition.) Wow -- great looking work, Charlotte. Watch for her FOLIO to open soon!
There's lots of great things happening during the June -- please enjoy!

Fred tracks the illusive spammer! With the influx of thousands of new UCEs ('Unsolicited Commercial Email" -- aka: SPAM) hitting the Graphic Design Network servers, our spam-hunting team decided to track a few of these low-lifes down, and find out where it's all coming from.
___ What we found was rather alarming, and out of more than 7,000 UCEs gathered since January 1st -- so far -- we haven't found but ONE honest person. But we've found lots of them who would sell their mother for a quarter, or stab you in the back for a nickel. Not a pretty sight.
___ So, here's the Top Ten things to do with your email. A short version in this month's PDF Edition ... a 3-minute version is at:

Folks, we can’t help you if you don’t cooperate...
Each month accesses (looking for that new EPS clip art disk) and prize registrations are denied in the Publishers’Warehouse.
__ Why? Because the email address keyed into the Loading Dock request was incorrect, or no longer in use. I find it hard to believe that people would register for something and then drop the address.
__ Remember: no spaces, correct spelling. Dozens of AOL users didn't put in "@aol.com" -- remember: name@aol.com, no spaces. (We assume they were AOL since they had no "@" indicator.)
__ Remember too, that the loading dock changes locations each month. You'll find the clue you need to the new location in each issue of this column.
Don't forget to write.
