August is for Augusta

... and we watch as summer draws to an end!

Of course, August is an interesting month for me since I was born on August, 18th. Don't ask me to do the math... just suffice to say I'll be 39 again this year.
___ Please forgive my short digression into pure, self-centered, egotistical meandering... since August is my birth month, this month we'll be celebrating in Augusta county VA... where the county seat is Staunton, VA, my birthplace. If you happen to be in Virginia around the 18th, just give me a call and we'll go par-tay.
___ Except I did want to mention that probably the reason I'm so good looking <grin> is that August 18th was also the birthdates for Robert Redford (1937), and Patrick Swayze (1954)... and so talented: famous film maker and director Roman Polanski (1933), and Martin Mull (1943)... so compassionate: former first lady Rosalynn Carter (1927)... and why I'm considered a favorite of the ladies: August 18, 1920, women were extended the right to vote with the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution... and why I never get any respect: August 18th celebrates "Bad Poetry Day." So there -- <grin again>.
.
Okay. Enough, of that....
.
We've got some good things happening this month. My trip to New York for Macworld gave me lots to talk about... dinner with the two wonderful ladies of WOW, Linnea Dayton and Sharon Steuer! Linnea gave me a copy of her fabulous new "Photoshop 6 WOW" book... which I'll be showing off to everyone! I had such a wonderful time with all the folks from Peachpit Press rekindling old friendships, and making new ones. So get out there and enjoy the latest Photoshop 6 WOW this month's Editor's Choice.
___ I also picked up a copy of PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS which is this month's (PDF) Reviews column... ooba-dooba you're going to like this for sure! A short review starts on page four, and two tutorials will join it when it migrates to Photoshop Tips & Tricks next week.
___ We've got a whole slew of book reviews from readers, as well as a backlog from Joyce Evans, our favorite golden graphics girl.
___ So sit back and enjoy what's left of summer (or winter depending on where on the globe you happen to be) and don't forget to visit us in Augusta county for August. See’ya there

August is brought to you by the color OLIVE
.
Someone wrote in and asked:
"Fred, why do you always pick bright, primary colors?"
Well, that gave us a shock, so this month we decided to look at the calendar, and look outside our window. The August colors will soon be fading toward September's brown hues, so OLIVE will make a good transition into our Augumn color spectrum. Remember to, as autumn breaks, add brown and you've got perfect camo colors.
___ In PageMaker or Quark XPress, just open the color dialog or palette, and set to RGB or CYMK and key in the recipes shown. We did.
Use these "heather" tones when you want a soft, natural feeling to your project. Everyone reacts warmly to these colors even if they're not in the red spectrum.

The August Publishers' Warehouse
This month, in answering one of the letters in the PDF edition I promised to upload my CD-ROM Jacket templates. They're there, ready to go -- both Mac & PC versions.
___ While I was there I saw the Loading Dock crew forklifts stacking up all the popular RETRO clip art from the 40s. If you haven't already gotten Zippy Pictures Volume 1 - Things (Retro art in eps format) and Zippy Pictures Volume 2 - People, then now's your chance. It's been brought back by popular demand. These are collections - whole disks full, complete with sampler pages you can print and add to your Publishers' Warehouse 3-ring binders.
We've also had a number of requests for the Photoshop "HISTOGRAMS" piece, a two-part series that was published in DT&G some months ago, so that's been added. If I'm not mistaken, I also saw a tutorial on "Gold Type" Photoshop technique and concept, and a piece on Extensis PhotoText 2... Sorry, Mac Only. Just party with us during August and have fun at the Publishers Warehouse loading dock. (By now you should have figured it out... if you don't, then you'll need to ask for directions.)

Have a wonderful August, and don't forget to write.

Fred tracks the illusive spammer! With the influx of thousands of new UCEs ('Unsolicited Commercial Email" -- aka: SPAM) hitting the Graphic Design Network servers, our spam-hunting team decided to track a few of these low-lifes down, and find out where it's all coming from.
___ What we found was rather alarming, and out of more than 7,000 UCEs gathered since January 1st -- so far -- we haven't found but ONE honest person. But we've found lots of them who would sell their mother for a quarter, or stab you in the back for a nickel. Not a pretty sight.

Folks, we can’t help you if you don’t cooperate...
Each month accesses (looking for that new EPS clip art disk) and prize registrations are denied in the Publishers’Warehouse.
__ Why? Because the email address keyed into the Loading Dock request was incorrect, or no longer in use. I find it hard to believe that people would register for something and then drop the address.
__ Remember: no spaces, correct spelling. Dozens of AOL users didn't put in "@aol.com" -- remember: name@aol.com, no spaces. (We assume they were AOL since they had no "@" indicator.)
__ Remember too, that the loading dock changes locations each month. You'll find the clue you need to the new location in each issue of this column.
Don't forget to write.
