This month's issue is brought to you
by the color AUTUMN
.
In August I said that September's brown hues would make a perfect compliment to OLIVE -- so this month we present the warm palette of autumn colors.
___ What we needed were the colors of changing foliage which includes: Brown, Burnt Sienna, Sienna and Gold. Add a touch of green, or from August, and you've got a friendly, comfortable color palette that almost everyone will easily warm up to.
___ In PageMaker or Quark XPress, just open the color dialog or palette, and set to RGB or CYMK and key in the recipes shown. At left you see a 60% Tint of the Gold, and throughout the issue you'll see other tints as well. Don't tint either of the russets because when tinted they quickly begin to look "dirty" or like a mistake. The Brown, on other hand should render a whole new world of tans when tinted. Try running a 15% to 20% tint of the brown over the entire sheet on your next project, then reverse the heads out letting the white paper colorize them white. (Careful! 24 point or larger!)
___ Use these "EARTH" tones when you want a soft, natural feeling to your project.
If you want to really experience the colors of fall, plan a visit to the Shenandoah Valley sometime between the 15th and 25th of October... you'll see more color than can be reproduced on the web. It's called Fall Foliage time in the Valley
.
Birthdays? From last month?
.
First, however let me say that I had no idea that so many of you would take me seriously when I promised a prize for the first person who guessed my age correctly.
___ Wow. So many of you responded, and so many missed it completely. You guys flatter me. Everyone thought my age would be a lot younger than it really is! What a great feeling. Aside from being 39 again this year, everyone took me too seriously and guessed low... well, with the exception of Suzy Richared from Humble, Texas who came within a few months!
___ Suzy writes: "Thanks, Fred, you've made a great weekend even better with the news that I won. As for how I came up with my guess, I looked at your writing and you seemed very experienced with a well honed sense of humor. Most people forget that without being able to see other people, everyone seems about the same age on the Internet. It's the great equalizer. My passions are Photoshop 6 and digital photography."
___ Congratulations, Suzy, I've jut put a tag with your name on it on Gary David Bouton's fabulous "INSIDE PHOTOSHOP 6" book for you to have and enjoy! Thanks for participating, and for reading DT&G!
___ Oh, speaking of Gary, his book just hit the shelves in special LIMITED EDITION form! You might want to check that out, those of you who didn't win. Beside that, Gary helps us out this month in our Letters column. Thanks Gary!
.
Don't miss the Fall Fonts Festival!
.
We'll all be there including the folks from the Publishers' Warehouse. The Festival will present not just fonts, but lots of the very best font links in the web. (These are all proofed and there's not a dud or spam site in the batch!)
___ Aside from some great shareware fonts, and a trip to the "LetterHeads" site, we'll be showing the GALLO fonts collection, and we'll be giving away a complete CD-ROM of Gallo Fonts. You won't want to miss that.
Go clicking mad at the Festival this month.

Big issue this month...
.
Editors and contributors went hog wild during August and bring you lots of juicy stuff for September: the &Else column carries a special supplement for parents and educators for the Back-To-School season.
Speaking of back to school... your humble editor is going back to school, but not as a student -- I've been asked to take the reins of "Introduction to Computer Graphics" class at JMU. Be sure to read this month's 60-Second Windows! (In the PDF edition for now! That's: http://www.graphic-design.com/PubWarehouse/DTG-Library.html)
.
New in the Design Bookshelf...
.
Speaking of back to school, the Design Bookshelf has several dozen new book reviews this month, including this month's Editor's Choice the whopping "Masters of Photoshop" book reviewed later in these pages! Later in the month, and for October, we're taking a whole stack of the best new books, lining them up, and letting YOU take your pick! It'll be fun, and you can find it at: http://www.design-bookshelf.com/
.
DTG Readers Web Sites...
.
This month we have an interesting mix of web sites to review -- all sent in fellow DTG readers. Among more than fourty that made it to the final cut, we'll start with a visit to the Havelock High School Class of 1981, for their 20th reunion! Then, we'll do a little shopping at the BookZonePro, for book publishing tips and resources. Nearby, we can peek in on Magic Scraps to see some creative ideas in scrapbook supplies. While we're at it, we don't want to miss the Krystal Kids Greetingscards site , and if you're a K-9 lover, you'll want to check out the Dog Trainingsite, for pet pampering ideas.
___ No month is complete without a little art, so this month we start with The Digital Artist, a professional exhibit and portfolio site for artists; and finish up with The Upstairs Gallery, a non-profit fine arts gallery. Interesting stops for web designers might be the Sandy Fletcher Real Estate site, which offers some interesting virtual tours, or check out the Music For Web Pages101 site, where you can download free music clips to publish on your site!
___ Three particularly special "Personal" web pages this month are: Articles for Women, a student class project for Indonesian women ; and, believe it or not, The Alien signal -- a UFO site all about extraterrestrials! For a truly unique experience, visit: A Robot Named John dot-com... where the creator, 'John' promises to bring you a smile! Bravo! Smiles is what it's all about, and you can see these and dozens of others -- this month -- in the Web department at Graphic-Design.com --

Photoshop Help is On The Way
One last comment. Sometime in the late fall you'll see a bright new star on the horizon. It represents months of work on the part of many people, and we think you're going to go for it: www.Photoshop911.com the Photoshop site with thousands of 'searchable' links to tutorials, graphics, downloadables, and portals.
___ It's not officially open yet, BUT if you know of any real good Photoshop sites, and would like to enter the grand opening sweepstakes, you can actually go there now and enter your suggestions.
So, unless you're a Photoshop user: do not click on this link!
.
So don't forget to join us at the festival, sit back and enjoy the wonderful colors, styles, and changes for Autumn.
.
We'll be looking for'ya...

Fred tracks the illusive spammer! With the influx of thousands of new UCEs ('Unsolicited Commercial Email" -- aka: SPAM) hitting the Graphic Design Network servers, our spam-hunting team decided to track a few of these low-lifes down, and find out where it's all coming from.
___ What we found was rather alarming, and out of more than 7,000 UCEs gathered since January 1st -- so far -- we haven't found but ONE honest person. But we've found lots of them who would sell their mother for a quarter, or stab you in the back for a nickel. Not a pretty sight.

Folks, we can’t help you if you don’t cooperate...
Each month accesses (looking for that new EPS clip art disk) and prize registrations are denied in the Publishers’Warehouse.
__ Why? Because the email address keyed into the Loading Dock request was incorrect, or no longer in use. I find it hard to believe that people would register for something and then drop the address.
__ Remember: no spaces, correct spelling. Dozens of AOL users didn't put in "@aol.com" -- remember: name@aol.com, no spaces. (We assume they were AOL since they had no "@" indicator.)
__ Remember too, that the loading dock changes locations each month. You'll find the clue you need to the new location in each issue of this column.
Don't forget to write.
