October
... Fall Fonts Festival continues!

Cool mornings, hot stuff

Welcome to October! Lots of fun this month and more to follow in November as we enter the holiday seasons.
___ The Publishers Warehouse Loading Dock is staying in place during October, so you don't have to change your bookmarks. Just use the word "festival" and you're in.
___ I've also put some new symbols clip art into the Warehouse, and several nice Halloween pieces. So, c'mon in and have a scary good time.
___ No, we have NOT selected a winner yet. The Fonts Festival give away will continue through November. But believe me, we have gotten some real hum-dingers in the responses to: "25 words or less why I should win Gallo Fonts."
.
Those wonderful digital artists
I'm very proud to be introducing the winners of the Macworld Digital Art Show and gallery awards! We've heard from over a dozen of the winners, and we'll be spotlighting their works in the weeks to come in the web site. This is an incredibly talented group of digital artists, who's work demands attention. We're pleased we can help others learn from and enjoy this wonderful art.
.
Web Sites for Review
Each month we look at reader web sites that have been sent in for review. Folks, these have been sent in for evaluation -- not just another web link. From the hundreds submitted, we try to pick out a good range of different topics and design levels. But the aurthors want YOUR input. Use that review form, please. We all want to hear from you.
___ This month we've got everything from Magic Scraps an online retail site for creative scrapbook supplies -- to the Hangzhou gulf and Zhejiang Jinke chemicals Co.,Ltd,, Bossart's Lessons, a curriculum and instructional support site for High School Web and Multimedia students; the Oak Ridge Miliary Academy; and a very timely submission: Rizwi's Bibliography for Medieval Islam, a classified bibliography of books and articles on Medieval Islam. You can see these and dozens of others -- this month -- in the Web department at Graphic-Design.com.
So don't forget to join us at the festival, sit back and enjoy the wonderful colors, styles, and changes for Autumn.

* Fall Fonts Festival Continues
In the Publishers' Warehouse "Festival" you'll find a slew of new files to download and fun to enjoy. Many of these have EPS files, or full page GIF files to go along, and for you Mac users, some even include "Smooth" fonts for use with TypeStyler.
.
* Ornaments:
Creatures, Atman, Yodle, Printers' Ornaments Vol. 2 "Flowers", African Ornaments Font, and a great collection of Native American Signs & Symbols for the Mac. Most unusual however is the HIROSHn font of Asian style characters and symbols. This page allows you to click on the characters to access large GIF files.
.
* Halloween:
PostCrypt Font (Mac), Marty Bee's
Halloweeny DingBats Font.
__ There are lots of new goodies in there too, and we're not going to list them all here.

Selecting Typefaces
.
In keeping with our Fall Fonts Festival another essay has been launched in both the DT&G PDF edition and in the &Type Department of the web site.
___ This month we answer a question prompted by last month's "Basic Rules of Layout & Design" column. This time the writer asked for information for selecting fonts.
___ How do you select a typeface? Click here to download the PDF edition, or click here to transport directly into the Fonts Festival already in progress.

We're still giving away a complete CD-ROM of Gallo Fonts. You won't want to miss that. So take a look at the GALLO Fonts CD, and have a ball...

Put a Digital Camera in your pocket
This month Doug Clifford introduces a great new "pocketable" digital camera from Olympus, the BRIO. See a picture and find out why this very well could be the ultimate digital camera to get this upcoming holiday season!

DT&G is brought to you this month, by October Colors.
NOTE: In the PDF the dark "red" is mislabeled. The HEX tag color is supposed to be 993300. The file was already gone before we discovered the error.
___ October colors drive deeper into the "Autumn" spectrum... but this time we thought we'd have a little fun.
Between each color is now a "hybrid" version of the two colors mixed in a pixel-by-pixel pattern, providing another six colors which can be utilized on the web. If you'd like to know how to set those up and use them, just ask and we'll do an article on it. Have a ghastly good time!
The full description of course is in Mr. Pixelsmith's "Color" column.

Photoshop Help is On The Way
One last comment. Sometime around the first of the year you'll see a bright new star on the horizon. It represents months of work on the part of many people, and we think you're going to go for it: www.Photoshop911.com the Photoshop site with thousands of 'searchable' links to tutorials, graphics, downloadables, and portals.
___ It's not officially open yet, BUT if you know of any real good Photoshop sites, and would like to enter the grand opening sweepstakes, you can actually go there now and enter your suggestions.
So, unless you're a Photoshop user: do not click on this link!
.
So don't forget to join us at the festival, sit back and enjoy the wonderful colors, styles, and changes for Autumn.

Fred tracks the illusive spammer! With the influx of thousands of new UCEs ('Unsolicited Commercial Email" -- aka: SPAM) hitting the Graphic Design Network servers, our spam-hunting team decided to track a few of these low-lifes down, and find out where it's all coming from.
___ What we found was rather alarming, and out of more than 7,000 UCEs gathered since January 1st -- so far -- we haven't found but ONE honest person. But we've found lots of them who would sell their mother for a quarter, or stab you in the back for a nickel. Not a pretty sight.

Folks, we can’t help you if you don’t cooperate...
Each month accesses (looking for that new EPS clip art disk) and prize registrations are denied in the Publishers’Warehouse.
__ Why? Because the email address keyed into the Loading Dock request was incorrect, or no longer in use. I find it hard to believe that people would register for something and then drop the address.
__ Remember: no spaces, correct spelling. Dozens of AOL users didn't put in "@aol.com" -- remember: name@aol.com, no spaces. (We assume they were AOL since they had no "@" indicator.)
__ Remember too, that the loading dock changes locations each month. You'll find the clue you need to the new location in each issue of this column.
Don't forget to write.
