November's Theme: The New Art

Welcome to November! As we enter the holiday seasons, what better way to do it than to decorate it with the styles and flavors of the Art Nouveau movement!
.
Fall Fonts Festival draws to an end
.
For the big finale, we've brought in more than a dozen fonts; several icon or dingbat fonts, a superb initial cap font, and a number of great clip art "Printers' Ornaments" eps files in the Art Nouveau tradition.
___ One font is called "Paris Metro" which is the type face which adorns the Paris subway system markers. As you can see by this photo (at left) taken by Carol at the entrance to the subway this past summer -- more details in our &Type department.
___ Appropriately enough, the Publishers Warehouse folks have decided to spend the month in Paris celebrating Art Nouveau in November, and all the visual delights that city has to offer.
.
Major Event: Designing Initial Caps
.
While we've got several superb fonts for initial caps in the Warehouse this month. we are thrilled and honored to have Ilene Strizver as our special guest contributor for the Fall Fonts Festival. Ilene is a typographic designer and consultant with 25 years experience at the International Typeface Corporation. (You know, ITC!!!) She cut her teeth on U&Lc after studying under Ed Benguiat -- with whom she's currently a colleague and fellow professor at NYU.
.
Holidays 2001 Now Officially Open
.
Over the years, we've shared many, many fun ideas in the computer graphics field which easily cross over into the arts and crafts genre in time for the holidays. Our annual Holiday theme during November and December is all about things you can do to decorate your publications, and web sites with a holiday flare. This year, it's our extreme pleasure to have all the best ideas beautifully wrapped up in the gift you shouldn't wait to give.
Those wonderful digital artists

This month we visit with Pamela Wells, next in our series of Macworld Digital Art Show and gallery award winners! Pamela discovered the wonderful world of Mac art while working for two publishing companies. Today she mixes her considerable talents with visions of the masters to create the stunning painting, "Apple One." (In the Design Center Gallery

Art Nouveau Fonts for the Holidays
.
In the Publishers' Warehouse you'll find a slew of new files to download and fun to enjoy. Many of these have EPS files, or full page GIF files to go along, and for you Mac users, some even include "Smooth" fonts for use with TypeStyler. Read carefully, because those darn loading dock folks have moved again. You know, they'll do anything and go anywhere to have a party.

Selecting Typefaces
.
In keeping with our Fall Fonts Festival another essay has been launched in both the DT&G PDF edition and in the &Type Department of the web site.
___ This month we answer a question prompted by last month's "Basic Rules of Layout & Design" column. This time the writer asked for information for selecting fonts.
___ How do you select a typeface? Click here to download the PDF edition, or click here to transport directly into the Fonts Festival already in progress

DT&G is brought to you this month, by Colors Nouveau.
.
For our Art Nouveau theme this month we attempted to extract the most important colors of the movement into our usual five color palette. Folks, it was very difficult. You see, the Art Nouveau movement didn't utilize what we consider to be primary colors -- they took the entire spectrum and muted it.
Our Art Nouveau palette this month is fully documented, of course, in Mr. Pixelsmith's "Color" column in the WebDesign & Review department.
.
New in the Design Bookshelf...
.
Learn your typography. After you read this month's special guest column by Ilene Strizver, you'll definitely want her new book TYPE RULES. I'm calling it the most siginficant book on typography since Alex White's "Type In Use." See if you agree.
Then there's the wonderful holidays, and a book that should be given as a gift to all the families on your list... but NOW. If you wait until Christmas, it will be too late.

60 Second Windows
This month we ask some rather important questions about the new Windows XP operating system, and stark reality . . . in . . . "May I See Your Passport Please"
Important to note:
___ Last month's column concerning "intentional" hoaxes surrounding the September 11 attack on the World Trade center has brought a shower of other hoaxes and trumped up graphics about the event. Some are rather rude, some are downright porno, but others are real screamers!
___ This month, I'll post the better ones in the 60-Second Windows web site as an adjunct to the #136 column "How do you spell Gall?"
.
Photoshop Help is On The Way
One last comment. Sometime around the first of the year you'll see a bright new star on the horizon. It represents months of work on the part of many people, and we think you're going to go for it: www.Photoshop911.com the Photoshop site with thousands of 'searchable' links to tutorials, graphics, downloadables, and portals.
___ It's not officially open yet, BUT if you know of any real good Photoshop sites, and would like to enter the grand opening sweepstakes, you can actually go there now and enter your suggestions.
So, unless you're a Photoshop user: do not click on this link!
.
So don't forget to join us at the festival, sit back and enjoy the wonderful colors, styles, and changes for Autumn.
.
We'll be looking for'ya...

Fred tracks the illusive spammer! With the influx of thousands of new UCEs ('Unsolicited Commercial Email" -- aka: SPAM) hitting the Graphic Design Network servers, our spam-hunting team decided to track a few of these low-lifes down, and find out where it's all coming from.
___ What we found was rather alarming, and out of more than 7,000 UCEs gathered since January 1st -- so far -- we haven't found but ONE honest person. But we've found lots of them who would sell their mother for a quarter, or stab you in the back for a nickel. Not a pretty sight.

Folks, we can’t help you if you don’t cooperate...
Each month accesses (looking for that new EPS clip art disk) and prize registrations are denied in the Publishers’Warehouse.
__ Why? Because the email address keyed into the Loading Dock request was incorrect, or no longer in use. I find it hard to believe that people would register for something and then drop the address.
__ Remember: no spaces, correct spelling. Dozens of AOL users didn't put in "@aol.com" -- remember: name@aol.com, no spaces. (We assume they were AOL since they had no "@" indicator.)
__ Remember too, that the loading dock changes locations each month. You'll find the clue you need to the new location in each issue of this column.
Don't forget to write.
