- JULY... celebrating hot dogs and Macworld
- By the time you get this July 4th will be over. For citizens of the US, July 4th has special meaning as day the Declaration of Independence was unanimously declared by the thirteen United States of America and adopted by the first Continental Congress in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776. What most people don't know however is that due to the fact that Federal Express and air travel were'nt around yet and it took until January 18, 1777 for the document was signed by all delegates and printed in multiple authenticated copies for each of the states.
In 1776 the July "4th" celebration actually happened on July 25th in Williamsburg Virginia, the original Capital. Trenton, NJ celebrated on July 26 as did New York, tearing down a statue of George the Third and melting it into bullets. It wasn't until the following year that July 4th became a lavish celebration. In Philadelphia on July 4, 1777 the tradition of drinking a toast to each "State of the Union" was established. Wouldn't that be something today! 50 drinks! Gives me a headache just thinking about it. Other things to celebrate? How about the first Zoo to open in the US happened in Philadelphia, in 1874. July must be the month for picnicking because it's National Hot Dog Month, Baked Bean Month (Michigan Bean Commission), and national Ice Cream Month (International Ice Cream Association.) So we'll pack up our picnic baskets and head on up to Philadelphia for a visit to the Zoo. You can come along, all month long. Enjoy the JULY DT&G, there are some good items this month. Keep those emails coming, and please remember we do eventually get to all of them.

- Purposeful Parenting Month
- July is also "Purposeful Parenting Month" which brings me to my next item for July.
Come on out and see us at Macworld Expo in New York's Javitz Center on July 18 when my brother and I present the MacBeginnings session: "Making the Internet Safe for Your Children." You may already know, I've become deeply involved in the online privacy and UCE issues through the Association of Apple Computer Users & Groups. This organization will soon be presenting cases to Congress for anti-spam legislation through advocacy efforts. This session at Macworld will show you just a small segment of a seminar we hope to put on the road for school groups, PTAs and other civic organizations to begin making parents and teachers aware of the real evils on the internet. Feel free to post your thoughts and feelings about UCE (spam) to the AACUG "Spam Survey" ... http://www.user-groups.net/submit.html   [top]
- In the July DTG PDF
- We do have a super-duper newsletter PDF for you -- in fact, it weighed in about 100K larger than usual because of the extra graphics. You'll see in the list below that it's all meat, and very little product news.
You'll want to download this month's PDF because content and updates in the web site are fairly slim at this point. I've devoted most of my time in the past 60 days to getting the Association of Apple Computer Users and Groups off the ground -- preparing their first printed newsletter "MUG" (AACUG Mac User Guide), and preparing my seminar for Macworld. It's been a tough month with many responsibilities that I just could not let go. &Editor - July Celebrating Hot Dogs, Zoos and Macworld 4 - Creative Thinking with Photoshop: with Joe Kling 5 - Technique: Anatomy of an award winning newsletter 7 - Letters: Rings around Photoshop 8 - Letters: Shadows on the floor: Projected type in Photoshop 9 - Letters: Finding the Object Tools. 10 - &Type! - Star Spangled Color...
- This month DTG is brought to you by the color Star Spangled
Just having fun! Here are some really primary colors for your star-spangled July that make some interesting mixes. The red and blue are actual flag colors. Always use those. Yellow makes agood accent, and the lighter blue is one that can't be accomplished with the 0000CC blue, so we use that as an adjunct. Note how the blue and yellow make green. Note also you get a good orange, purple and burgundy from the other combinations. Have fun, and PLEASE send in YOUR favorite color combinations. ... http://www.graphic-design.com/Web/PixelSmith/colors/   [top]

- Web Design and Review Duz Entertainment...
- Entertainment must have been on everyone's minds last month because we sure got a slew of summer performance sites. Check out the Chautauqua of the Arts, a summer arts and crafts festival, and then take a stroll to The Celtic Rathskallions, a celtic music and educational group for educators.
The CUHFM Music Experience promises to "Pick you up and make you feel good," and while we're off the beaten path, we'll stop in at the RhythmEngine-- one of the most unusual web descriptions I've seen: "the official site of an un-simultaneous session" whatever that is. (These fellows will be performing the "Rhythm Engine" at SIGGRAPH on the 25th of July!) You can also Learn to drive in the bradford area - Erics School of Motoring! Here's an important site: Dead Wrong - The truth about domestic violence incest and child abuse. The webmaster wants our opinions, commenting: "I need to keep it extremely simple because a lot of non-profits visit and they have old computers. any ideas?" Another important site is Urban Women: Holistic Health for Young Women in NYC, features simple tips for taking care of yourself, and has links to other sites. For some fun, try Dennis's Web Tree where you can play a few games, download swome MP3s or share some jokes. Then you can take a look at The Bag 'N Box Man web site, who's owner says "Do you have any problems with it whatsoever?" Let us know. Unbelievable that the MSN Communities would show up here for a review -- but they're here, so go get'em. The owners of the Northampton House web site would like to know if they need to hire someone to redo the site! The madspedersen.comphotography site wants your feedback on concept and execution as well as any suggestions you might have for improvement. Finally, for you graphics hounds who just can't seem to get enough, try FreeBackgrounds2002, the site for anyone who needs backgrounds for web pages. Please zip on out there and give the needy sites a review. Their webmasters will appreciate it, and perhaps they'll even help you some day. - Top Ten Rules for Safe Computing
- This month's 60-Second Windows goes along with our Macworld topic, but doesn't just relate to Macs. These rules apply to everyone who uses a computer. It's in the PDF, and will be posted to the web site before the 8th of July.
I urge you to read it, then pass along the link to all your friends, relatives and business acquaintances. ... http://www.60-Seconds.com/articles/145.html   [top]
- Upcoming for August and September
- When we get back from Macworld on the 22nd, I'll immediately begin uploading news and info to the Design Center web site. We have a number of articles on hold -- I'll post those -- and we have several hot items for July that will also go up.
Our August issue is "Back To School" and I've been putting together a whole array of important "fall" items for designers and publishers. During June we've been swamped with new books -- that's one thing. We've also been discovering the wonderfully powerful features of GoLive 6, Canvas 8, Quark 5 and others that you'll want to see. If you are planning to be at New York's Macworld, be sure to look me up and say hello. You can catch me in the MacBeginnings area a half hour before, and after the session. And now, enjoy the PDF, lay back, and have a wonderful July. Fred ... http://www.graphic-design.com/   [top]

- Help the community do something about spam...
- Do you get spam? Do you wish you didn't?
The Design Center is helping sponsor a SPAM SURVEY conducted by the Association of Apple Computer Users & Groups. The organization is chartered for community service, education and legislation advocacy for technology. SPAM is one of the big issues they hope to take to Washington D.C. this year, and they need YOUR help. Go there and fill out the simple, secure and safe SPAM SURVEY. It will help them gather data for their UCE Presentation. * Go To: http://www.user-groups.net/submit.html   [top]

- Top Ten Signs You're About to be RIPPED OFF
Fred tracks the illusive spammer! With the influx of thousands of new UCEs ('Unsolicited Commercial Email" -- aka: SPAM) hitting the Graphic Design Network servers, our spam-hunting team decided to track a few of these low-lifes down, and find out where it's all coming from. What we found was rather alarming, and out of more than 7,000 UCEs gathered since January 1st -- so far -- we haven't found but ONE honest person. But we've found hundreds of them who would sell their mother for a quarter, or stab you in the back for a nickel. Not a pretty sight. * Go To: http://www.60-Seconds.com/articles/130a.html   [top]

Each month accesses (looking for that new EPS clip art disk) and prize registrations are denied in the Publishers'Warehouse. Why? Because the email address keyed into the Loading Dock request was incorrect, or no longer in use. I find it hard to believe that people would register for something and then drop the address. Remember: no spaces, correct spelling. Dozens of AOL users didn't put in "@aol.com" -- remember: name@aol.com, no spaces. (We assume they were AOL since they had no "@" indicator.) Remember too, that the loading dock changes locations each month. You'll find the clue you need to the new location in each issue of this column. Don't forget to write. * Go To: http://www.graphic-design.com/contact.html   [top]
