PageMaker to InDesign Upgrade Deal?
Adobe InDesign 2.0 PageMaker Upgrade -- all current users of PageMaker (any version) can now upgrade to InDesign 2.0 for only $299, as announced by Adobe on December 16. Many designers, educators, magazine publishers and other creative professionals began their careers using PageMaker and have successfully made the switch to InDesign as their primary layout and design program. The transition is easy since InDesign easily imports layout files created in Adobe PageMaker and they share the Adobe look and feel. This Adobe InDesign 2.0 PageMaker Upgrade allows PageMaker users to upgrade to InDesign 2.0 for an estimated price of $299. Although not supported by most high-end printers and service bureaus, Adobe InDesign is a natural progression for creative professionals who are responsible for creating and printing graphically intensive layouts for magazines, newspapers, books, catalogs, advertising, packaging and other materials. (However, for a Quark AND Pagemaker user, $299 is STILL too steep to introduce a new player with a new learning curve -- particularly since our service bureaus and printers still prefer Quark XPress.)

SymmetryWorks 2 Released
Artlandia, Inc., has released SymmetryWorks 2, a major new version of the company's best-selling plug-in for Adobe Illustrator. The new version provides a general and comprehensive computer-aided design (CAD) solution for creating repeated seamless patterns, an onerous task routinely confronted by surface, textile, and quilt designers, interior decorators, stationery developers, web designers, illustrators, sculptors, fine artists, and other creative professionals. Designing patterns to flawlessly cover surfaces once required considerable skills and painstaking efforts. The designer had to reproduce the repeated unit (motif) dozens of times and perform hundreds of precision rotations, reflections, and other transformations to ensure exact positioning of all copies of the motif. To modify even a single element, the whole process needed to be repeated. SymmetryWorks 2.0 is immediately available for Mac OS, Mac OS X, and Windows platforms for all versions of Adobe Illustrator starting from 8.0. In particular, the plug-in is fully compatible with the latest releases of Illustrator 10. The purchase price of Artlandia SymmetryWorks 2.0 is $164.95. Upgrade from the previous version is $50.00.

For some Fun, Pipemare puzzle game
Pipemare is a 2D pipe building puzzle game, where you race against the clock to form a path for the water to flow. Other games of this type released in the past have given you the pipe pieces randomly, one at a time. Pipemare makes all the pieces available at the start of the level. Doesn't this make it too easy? Nope! Some types of pipe pieces are restricted in number for certain levels. Further challenges are provided in the game play area -- obstacles (brick walls, existing pipes, frozen ground) can force you to build your pipe in ways you really didn't want to, some levels require you to connect your pipe to existing pipe pieces on the screen, and bonuses may tempt you into going where you probably shouldn't! Plays on all versions of MAC OS

What do people search for?
In a Wired story, Leander Kahney reports on Google, Lycos and other search sites that have unleashed lists of the year's top search terms. It's an interesting article because many believe search words are an accurate barometer of cultural fads, fears and obsessions.
