An Essential Primer for Today's Competitive Market
Design Matters: Logos 01: An Essential Primer for Today's Competitive Market The nuts and bolts of effective logo design. The design bar is at an all time high for those brave enough to participate in the industry. Today's designers must be clear on all the steps necessary to create work that stands out in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Unfortunately, most design books only focus on type, color, and layout issues. The Design Matters series takes a more in-depth approach, allowing designers to learn not only how to create work that is aesthetically appealing, but that is also strategy-driven and smart.
This book focuses on creating logos, while others in the series dissect brochures, packaging, publications, and letterhead systems. Each book offers all the essential information needed to execute strong designs in concert with beautiful and well-crafted examples, so readers can successfully hit the mark every time.
Alex Walker of SitePoint says:
In the first two-thirds of the book, the Capsule team members carefully explain their internal design process as a series of three practical steps -- planning, creation, and implementation.
Now we're not talking about airy-fairy concepts and empty platitudes here. Although the theory is always made clear, there are also lots of very hands-on, repeatable techniques you can add to your design repertoire.
Their Visual Metaphor Matrix Exercise is a nice example of the practical value this book provides. The idea is to take a grid and list your brand attributes down the left side (e.g. speed, simplicity, care, etc.), and place visually descriptive words across the top axis.
Your task is to work with each word combination to produce a simple thumbnail sketch of the images those words evoke for you. This provides a simple, repeatable method to generate lots of raw ideas quickly during the early concept phase of the design.
If you've ever stared helplessly at a blank page and a deadline, this is just one way to start moving forward again.
